Our next guest spent 10 years fighting Islamic terrorists as an undercover agent with the CIA. Michelle Rigby Assad ,a christian was assigned to the Middle East and so firsthand the evil of radical Islam and its impact on the church. She's written a book about her experience it's called Breaking Cover. Assad has concerns with the ongoing battle against Isis in Syria and Iraq. What do you think will be the consequences of the United States pulling out of Syria? I think it's an unfortunate decision because even though the number of fighters on the ground is minimal at this point in comparison to what is what it was a couple years ago. The ideology and the basic underpinning of terrorism is still very much alive involved. and I believe that if we don't continue to carry out counterterrorism operations along with our partners, that it's going to spring up again. What will the impact be for Christians in Syria if the United States pulls out? Well, in portions of Syria where the government has control, they're actually fairly safe in those areas. But it's the Christians that are more dispersed in the areas where there is less Bashar al Assad government control. and also in northern Iraq, you have the issue of entire towns that were devastated by ISIS. 이라크 북부 지역에서 마을들 전체가 ISIS에 의해 폐허가 되었다는 소식도 알고 있습니다. and so while a lot of the Christians want to go home, desire to go back, they are they have it's going to cost tens of millions of dollars to rebuild these locations and they're gonna need the support of the international community to do that. Are you concerned about the future of Christianity in the Middle East? Absolutely. My husband is actually a Christian from Egypt who had to come to the United States to get his education because of persecution issues. and it really concerns me to see so many Christians who say I can't do it anymore. I have to find a safe haven outside of the Middle East to raise my family. and so I think to the extent that we can help these people who need to get out and help reestablish lives elsewhere we should but for those who want to stay the extent to which we can support them and trying to maintain a living in the Middle East, we should also do that. You had a chance several years ago to make contact with Christians in the Middle East. You've had experienced there how did that affect your faith? Very profoundly. To hear story after story of people who fled ISIS and to see them in such desperate circumstances, a lot of them found a safe haven in Kurdistan but then weren't able to get jobs and weren't able to find ways to support their families to see them gutted that these levels was really hard. ISIS로 부터 도망친 사람들의 이야기를 듣고 그런 절망적인 상황에 있는 그들을 보면서 그들 중 많은 사람들이 쿠르드족 지역에서 안전한 피난처를 찾지만 직업을 구하지 못하고 가족을 먹여 살릴 방법을 찾지 못하고 있고 이런 사람들이 많아 지는 것을 보는 것 또한 힘든 것입니다. and to see them also question whether they had a future and what that future would look like is very hard to witness. Our Muslims leaving the faith ? I believe that for the first time in decades, the Arab Spring created an opening where people were able to question things for the first time whether that's politics or religion and so people are starting to say look I'm not sure I buy into this. It's still dangerous to do that because leaving Islam your ear is not okay you're supposed to be killed if you leave the religion. but Muslims are no longer. There they're starting to question that and question the tenets of their faith and how they practice it which I think is a very positive thing. We want to encourage freedom of thought, expression and conscience. How did your faith help you work for the CIA? 당신의 신념이 어떻게 CIA를 위해 일하게 했나요? hmm it gave me a foundation during a period of time that was so emotionally, physically and spiritually difficult. 그것은 감정적으로 신체적으로 영적으로 힘든 시기 동안 나에게 기본 신념을 주었습니다. um you know working in war zones working in such difficult subject matter such as terrorism and torture and killing and manipulation. It's if you don't have something to fall back on or if you don't have a ultimate purpose. It will really wear on you. and so for me my faith in God is what kept me going in really difficult circumstances. Thank you for your service do you got you thank you so much George thank you. |
